Whether you're looking to start your day by satisfying that sweet tooth or taking in a few carbs, pastries are a source of energy most health-goers simply don't understand. Best of all, Ottawa has a little something for everyone. Are you in need of a chocolate fix or maybe you're craving for the best bagels in town? Well, this city has them and they're damn good too.
BeaverTail Pastry @ BeaverTails
There's nothing like heading over to the nation's capital and visiting one of these popular kiosks. Sink your teeth into this Canadian staple and one of the most delicious desserts in town. The BeaverTail is a fried dough pastry and comes in a variety of flavours like chocolate hazelnut, cinnamon and sugar, maple butter and many more. You can also add extra toppings to this amazing sweet like Reese's pieces, Oreo's chunks, etc. Recently, the BeaverTail made headlines with U.S. President Obama's visit to the Byward Market and put this sweet on the international map.
Donut @ SuzyQ Doughnuts
This is a 5-star high-quality artisanal donut shop that shouldn't be missed. The store is tucked away, but that doesn't mean you won't end up waiting a lineup for these delicious treats. Wrap your hands around a maple bacon donut before they run out.
Cronut @ Art-Is-In Bakery
Located in an industrial building, Art-is-in Bakery is an excellent place for hot or cold coffee, bread, tasty pastries and a variety of sandwiches. They have some creative features like the boxed water shown in the picture above and they also offer their own version of the cronut. Prepare to wait since this large bakery can get crowded.
Mini-Cakes @ Holland's Cake and Shake
We went to this hip establishment to have a shake and a few of these mini-cakes. It's really cool as you can mix a cake into your shake to give it that extra kick (as if more sugar was needed). The artisanal pastries are whipped up from a variety of creations with fresh local ingredients and take the experience of these tiny cakes to a whole other level. This shop offers some tasty sandwiches as well.
Kettleman's Bagel Co.
You should come to this establishment if you're looking for baked goods. Kettleman's specializes in authentic Montreal-style bagels prepared on a wood burning oven right before your eyes. Get them fresh right out of the oven to enjoy them thoroughly and there's plenty of seating available. We truly loved their bagel sandwiches and they prepare some excellent gourmet coffee too.
Another option for bagels is the Ottawa Bagelshop and Deli.
Snail @ Bread By Us
I know what you're thinking...did we just ask you to try a snail? Is this actually a pastry? Actually, it's a cinnamon snail or better known as the French pastry "escargot". In other words, it's a cross between a croissant and a cinnamon brioche. If you haven't noticed the evolution of pastries, there's a big craze going on right now where two pastries are combined into one mouth-watering dessert.
Weekend brunch @ Edgar in Gatineau
You will be forced to cross the bridge and find this little gem on the opposite side of the Ontario border and head into Gatineau, Québec. This chic little café has a nice variety of baked goods and some creative dishes from the chef are available. If you can make it for their famous brunch on the weekend, then please do so. You will not regret this.
